KUCHING: Satok assemblyman Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg has described Semariang state constituency as the backbone of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) in Kuching.
He said this is because the huge majority won by its assemblywoman Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali against Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidate Zulrusdi Hol in the fight for the constituency reflects what the Malay community there wants.
He said the majority of the Malay community in the area has rejected the opposition.
Abang Johari also said the changing political landscape in the state has seen the opposition spreading its propaganda, especially among the youths, to penetrate Kuching.
“Sadly for the opposition, the Malay youths in Kuching are not easily influenced by them as we have voters who are matured, knowledgeable and steadfast to the Barisan Nasional,’’ he said during the Semariang BN election machinery thanksgiving dinner on Friday night.
He also said that BN enjoyed convincing victories in Malay-majority areas such as Tupong, Satok, Demak Laut, Pantai Damai and Semariang, which reflects the unity of the Bumiputeras when facing various challenges.
Abang Johari, who is also Minister of Housing and Urban Development and also Minister of Tourism and Heritage, said Semariang would be at the forefront of development in the near future.
“The government has already approved another general hospital in Semariang.
“ This will be the second general hospital in Kuching,” he said, adding that upgrading of roads would also be done to ease traffic congestion.The projects according to Abang Johari are part of a sustainability development plan, which considers every angle meticulously in order to realise the transformation of Kuching city.
He also said with the recent appointment of him as the Minister of Tourism and Heritage, he hoped to give the Sarawak riverbanks a facelift to boost the tourism industry and spur the economy.
Sharifah Hasidah, who garnered 8,008 votes against Zulrusdi’s 2,577 votes attributed the win to the BN Semariang election machinery.
“The win is actually ours. We will not win if we did not work hard,” she said.
Sharifah Hasidah has the support of 21 PBB branches in Semariang. Also present during the thanksgiving dinner was Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Fadillah Yusuf and Datuk Abang Khalid Abang Marzuki, who is the director of operations for the Semariang election machinery.
